News and views of Mac OS X and iPhone Programming

In two earlier posts (post1 and post2) I complained about the sad loss of the iCal drawer in Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) (Mac OS X 10.5 at Amazon).

In a post last weekend I ‘complained’ how iCal in Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) (Mac OS X 10.5 at Amazon) was now ‘broken’ as it was a pain to edit calendar entries. A week later and it is still giving me grief!

Has Apple broken iCal in Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)?

A very interesting post over at the TextMate blog where reasons for not supporting earlier versions of Mac OS X are discussed – see TextMate Blog ยป 2.0 Will Require Leopard.

A couple of users have commented that iCal files exported from iCalMaker contain \, (backslash comma) instead of , (comma).

This is weird…. The reason that it was \, was because in earlier versions of iCal the , on its own caused problems (why? I have no idea!). Anyway, the fix for this was quite simple and just required the removal of the \… I can only conclude that something ‘internal’ on the Mac has changed… Either it is in the way files are saved, or the way iCal imports files.

I am now worried that this fix has broken iCalMaker for an earlier version of iCal. Unfortunately I have no way of testing it.

Footnote: This ‘bug’ fix will be rolled in to iCalMaker and will be part of the ‘Universal Binary’ release, which should be out as soon as the ordered MacBook Pro arrives and the ‘Universal’ can be tested.

This week an iCalMaker user sent a really useful Palm Desktop file. The file contained appointments dating back to 2000 and there must have been several hundred appointments. The file proved to be a really useful test for iCalMaker.

I have just spent a couple of days exchanging e-mails with a user in the US that was having some problems with moving repeat events from iCal to a Palm using iCalMaker.

iCalMaker has been updated to version 1.8.5

The update includes:

  • Updates for 10.4 (Tiger):
  • iCalMaker displays the calendars available to iCal
  • Corrected a problem with export to iCal
  • Corrected a problem with direct import from iCal
  • Updated the esellerate sales engine
  • Fixed a bug that was causing the ‘mail’ window not to close when ‘add to calendar’ was selected (iCalMaker can send appointments to Apple Mail, Eudora, Powermail, Mailsmith and Entourage)
  • Fixed a number of minor bugs
  • Some general improvements to the code base (this is in preparation for some of the changes in version 2)
  • Recompiled using xcode 2.0

iCalMaker is available from MMISoftware (http://www.mmisoftware.co.uk) and is a 548 kb download (http://www.mmisoftware.co.uk/downloads/icalmaker.dmg.sit). A fully functional trail version of the software is available, and an activation code can be purchased for $34.95.

This was an interesting problem and took some time to solve….

Whilst working on iCalMaker iCal tends to get a good ‘bashing’ with various file uploads and other interaction with iCalMaker.

In the past, i.e. pre-10.4 (tiger), iCal used to handle this fairly well, however, under 10.4 there have been a few weird crashes and after one such crash iCal would not restart. However, a solution was found…

Interesting point on MacInTouch about iCal problems in Tiger.

It appears that the iCal changes, that are causing problems with iCalMaker, have also broken Apple’s own Backup program!

It is nice not to be alone….
