MMISoftware has releases two new free Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculators, bmiStone | App Store Link and bmiKilo | App Store Link, for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Your body mass index (BMI) is calculated by dividing your weight, in kilograms (kg), by your height in meters squared. It is a fairly simple calculation, but can be made more tricky if you don’t know your weight in kilos, or your height in meters, but instead in stone and pounds, and feet and inches A value of 20 – 25 for your BMI is considered ‘normal’, below 20 underweight, and above 25 overweight. A value above 30 is viewed as being obese.

Unless you are a child, elderly, or a professional athlete your BMI can be taken as a ‘risk factor’ for developing diseases such as diabetes or heart disease. The higher your BMI, the higher your increased risk. A recent report (see Obesity linked to swine flu deaths) has even linked obesity (so high BMI) to swine flu deaths.

The two new free iPhone and iPod Touch Body Mass Index Calculators (bmiStone | iTunes Link and bmiKilo | App Store Link) from MMISoftware are now available on the iTunes App Store.

Both calculators can calculate you BMI from your height and weight. bmiStone uses stone (st) and pounds (lb) for your weight, and feet (ft) and inches (in) for your height. bmiKilo uses kilos (kilograms, kg) for your weight, and meters (m) for your height.

If you are looking for a free BMI calculator that works in pounds (lb) and feet (ft) and inches (in), then you might like to try bmiPounds (home page | App Store Link).

Alternatively, if you are looking for a BMI calculator that can work with any units, then you may wish to look at bodyCal [App Store Link] or bmiCal [App Store Link].
