To iPhone, or not to iPhone…
… that is the question.
I have been debating (with myself) for some time about getting an iPhone, or even an iPod Touch (link to Apple). The more I have thought about it, the more I have come to realise that both devices have ‘deal-breakers’.
iPod Touch: It looks good (iPod Touch at Amazon). But do I need another iPod? Not really. I like the calendar function, but as I understand entries can’t be edited or added. That is deal-breaker 1. Deal-breaker 2 is the lack of Bluetooth. If I am in range of a WiFi network I am either at home or at work and I will therefore use my laptop. If I am ‘out-and-about’ and need net access on the iPod Touch I will need to be able to connect to my mobile phone, which has net access, and for that I need Bluetooth.
iPhone: Yes, it look gorgeous, and I want one… but, and it is a HUGE but, and a mega-deal breaker, it is not 3G. Sounds a minor thing, but I am used to 3G on my mobile, and I even find that slow at times… the thought of going 2.5G (or less) is like asking me to go back to a dial-up modem! The fact that it is locked to one service provider is also a major turn-off. Another thing I didn’t like was that the system was ‘closed’ to developers, but it appears that will be solved by February 2008.
So, my plan. Either wait until Bluetooth is added to the iPod Touch (iPod Touch at Amazon), or wait until the iPhone goes 3G, which is rumoured to be in spring/summer 2008
