Wow! As part of some work on PhotoGPSEditor and PhotoInfoEditor in which I was looking at how maps were used in the programs (see this post and this post) I think I have solved the problem in which parts of the maps were not being correctly re-drawn on zoom and drag (this was also mentioned in a previous post over at TUAW (see their post)).

The solution was really weird, and it appears to be a problem with Google…. (Well, that is my explanation, and I am sticking to it!)

I found that if PhotoGPSEditor and PhotoInfoEditor first load their maps with any zoom setting other than ’1′ (i.e. maximum zoom-out), e.g. 3, and the map is positioned over the US (or in fact anywhere), then the problem is solved. When the maps are zoomed, or scrolled, all the parts load. Excellent!

This solution had to be implemented at the server level, and also within the code of PhotoGPSEditor and PhotoInfoEditor, and therefore will be rolled in to the next releases of the two programs (which in the case of PhotoGPSEditor should be within the next week or so, and in PhotoInfoEditor shortly after).

PhotoInfoEditor and PhotoGPSEditor are freeware programs from MMISoftware – continued development can be supported by making donations (PhotoInfoEditor Donation | PhotoGPSEditor Donation), or purchases at the MMISoftware GPS and camera stores.

Both programs are available for download:
