News and views of Mac OS X and iPhone Programming

mailMaker has been updated to version 1.2 for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

The update includes: the addition of version checking (the program, like all MMISoftware programs, will check if a new version is available – this can be disabled); a number of minor changes to make it Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) compatible; recompiling the program with xcode 2.0; and the updating of the esellerate sales engine.

During the update (and testing of the program) a major bug was discovered which prevented some large messages from being sent. This bug was fixed!!

The program is a 412 kb download from MMISoftware – mailMaker download

The program is shareware, costs $15 (USD) and there is a free demo version available. The program can be purchased using either the integrated sales system in mailMaker or directly from the MMISoftware store.

Power on X has been updated to version 1.6.5

Power on X is a tool for the calculation of statistical power (more information on power calculations and Power on X). The program can perform calculations of required sample size to achieve a desired power, and calculations of power for previously run studies/experiments. In addition, the paid version can generate power/sample size tables.

The update has been tested on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and recompiled using xcode 2.0

The software is shareware ($30 US, approx. £17 GBP) and can be purchased through this site. A demonstration version can be downloaded. The demo version has a disabled ‘power table’ feature and a ‘nag’ screen.

Web Photos has been updated to version 1.3. Web Photos 1.3:

  • now handles rotated images correctly under 10.4 (Tiger)
  • has improved display of resized images
  • improved quality of generated thumbnail and main images greatly improved
  • has increased speed of site generation
  • now produces slightly smaller jpeg files in the album / website
  • has corrected a bug that caused pictures not to be displayed when captions or previous / next links were moved
  • and was re-compiled for 10.4 (Tiger)

Web Photos is shareware ($15) and is available from MMISoftware. The program is a 112 k download.

Finally! One round of updates completed!

At MMISoftware there is a group of programs called the ‘One Trick Ponies‘. These are small (and relatively cheap) programs that do one thing (may be two!) and do it well, However, Tiger (10.4) managed to break some features in all of them!

quickWebAlbum, which is used to quickly creates web albums and slideshows from a folder of jpeg images, and JPEGCleaner, which removes jpeg resources and metadata from jpeg files, both had problems with rotated images due to changes in Tiger (see an earlier post). Both programs now correctly handle jpeg rotation under 10.4 and the image resizing code has been improved to produce better quality images (see an earlier post).

Tunes Menu, which is a menu-based CD search from iTunes, and WebsiteCleaner, which prepares html, jpeg and gif files for use on the web, have also been updated and recompiled for 10.4

All programs are available from MMISoftware in the ‘One trick pony‘ section. The program are shareware, except for Tunes Menu which is freeware, and are free upgrades for registered owners.

<work is continuing on the updates of MMISoftware programs.

iCalMakeris still in beta-testing and should be ready within a week or so.

Work on JPEGCleaner is complete. It has been beta-tested under 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 and is now working fine. Whilst testing I encountered a number of ‘interesting’ problems…..

Due to a business trip, and a lack of internet connection in a hotel, the update of iCalMaker has been delayed a few days. Beta testing of the latest build has continued and it should be released some time this week.

Small-1Updating iCalMaker for 10.4 has (hopefully) finished and the program is now being beta-tested (if you wish to test the program drop me a line).

Updating has been slower than expected (hoped) due to other work commitments (see a post later today). However, it is hoped that beta-testing will not take too long and that the program can soon be released.

Besides writing software for Mac OS X MMISoftware also develops websites for companies.

Over the past few months MMI has been working with Quartz Finances Ltd to develop their new website. Part of the project was to develop an online financial calculator called CheckLease. This turned out to be an interesting problem….

In an earlier post I said how sales had dropped off in the 6 weeks prior to the launch of Tiger. Interestingly sales are now beginning to increase (and we haven’t even released the ‘Tiger’ updates yet), however, they are still not back to their pre-’Tiger-six-week’ level. I guess time (and the release of software updates) will tell.

Interesting point on MacInTouch about iCal problems in Tiger.

It appears that the iCal changes, that are causing problems with iCalMaker, have also broken Apple’s own Backup program!

It is nice not to be alone….
