iCal competition at Spymac

The folks over at Spymac are running a competition on how people use iCal.

What they say is:

What do you use iCal for? Do you keep track of your soccer games, the weather, medical appointments, school assignments, or something strange? Tell Spymac the strange things that you use iCal for and have the chance to win a one year Wheel account, your choice of Spymac shirt from the online store and an iCalMaker license from MMISoftware.

Submit your answers by posting in this thread (one entry per person). Contest closes February 4 then voting will be opened until February 11.

Link to the contest page.

As you can see, one of the prizes is a license for iCalMaker, so get your entries in!

BMI Calculator on version tracker – user comments

I was just checking ‘BMI Calculator‘ on VersionTracker and came across the following comment:

Contributed by: DTDunn 01-15-05 12:20PM

This software rounds off your height (hey, it’s free but a review is a review) which blows if you are (for example) 6 feet 2.5 inches tall. In addition, it loads ads for losing weight. Lose the ads and allow .5 increments in height and I’ll change my rating.

And I had to post a reply:

Worrying about 0.5 of an inch is a waste of time (there are more import things to worry about) as you change at least this, in height, during the day as your spine contracts (try measuring your height at the start of the day and at the end of the day). Also, try measuring your weight first thing in the morning and last thing at night! The error in height change, and weight change, over the day is greater than the error of 0.5 inches.

Finally, the program is not an ‘Ad Delivery Vehicle’. The user has to click on the link on the program, which then takes the user to a webpage. The link is also clearly marked as taking the user to Amazon (this feature has been in the program for at least a year).

Actually, clicking on the link takes you to a page at MMISoftware, (US page, UK page or Europe, depending on where you are based), which then has a link to Amazon! Basically, BMI Calculator does not load ads on to your machine, and MMISoftware would never produce a program that loads (or transmits) any information without the users knowledge.

BMI Calculator is freeware and can be downloaded from MMISoftware at this link (58 KB)

MMISoftware website, Power on X (1.6) and BMI Calculator (1.6.1) updated

Both Power on X (a statistical power calculator) and BMI Calculator (a body mass index calculator) have been updated.

Power on X: The update dealt with a small bug in power calculations when only 1 standard deviation value was used. The resulting values were correct, however, the program would occasionally report that it could not perform the calculation. This update also added manual and automatic version checking. Power on X can be downloaded from MMISoftware. (download link)

BMI Calculator: This was a minor update. Manual and automatic version checking was added and the ‘more information’ link on the application was changed to ‘Suggested reading at Amazon’. In addition, the ‘Suggested reading…’ link will now take you to the MMISoftware Bookshop for your country, i.e. the UK, Europe [Germany], US or ‘rest of the world‘ (US). BMI Calculator can be downloaded from MMISoftware. (download link)

Website update: Not a major update. Just general tidying and a spot of spring-cleaning. One change that was made was to the ‘Book shop‘ which now includes a better selection of books.

JPEGCleaner, quickWebAlbum, and WebSiteCleaner updated

JPEGCleaner, quickWebAlbum, and WebSiteCleaner have been updated.

The updates are fairly minor and generally just includes the addition of a version checking system.

All programs are available from MMISoftware.

Downloads: JPEGCleaner, quickWebAlbum, and WebSiteCleaner.

Very quiet, for a long time…

Well, no posts for some time…. The reason?

There has been a major re-write of iCalMaker in the works; version 1.8.

The rewrite is to allow the continued expansion/improvement of the program and for the addition of new features. At present no new features have been added (they will be added for version 2), and it is unlike that new features will be added to the 1.8 release, however a number of minor bugs have been squashed. As the re-write has been so ‘total’ the program has undergone extensive beta testing, however, there is, as always, a concern that something may have been missed. Therefore, we are making the program available to registered users for beta-testing. If you are interested in being a beta tester please e-mail: beta@mmisoftware.co.uk

Thanks, Nick

P.S. Happy New Year
