PhotoGPSEditor

What can I do with PhotoGPSEditor

PhotoGPSEditor is a program that allows you to edit or add 'meta-data' to a picture/photo file (see the tutorial) - the program supports a wide range of image formats including JPEG, TIFF and RAW images. Once this data has been added it stays associated with the file unless the file is re-written by a program that does not support 'meta-data'. PhotoGPSEditor is free, however, you can support further development through either making a donation at PayPal or through signing up for services, or buying goods, at TrialPay.

Picture meta-data is additional data associated with a picture / photo that describes the picture in some way so that the picture can be found by searches or catelogued. For example, if you took some pictures whilst on holiday you could add meta-data (keywords / description) to the pictures that describes the picture. This meta-data can be added using PhotoGPSEditor and in addition you could also add 'location' information by placing a pointer on the map in the 'map window' at the location the picture was taken. Once a photo has 'position' information added PhotoGPSEditor will query a database at http://terraserver-usa.com/ to find the nearest town/area/country for those coordinates and this information will also be added to the meta-data for the photo.

The 'position information' can be extracted from GPS data (track) files. PhotoGPSEditor can import the data from the GPS (gpx or NMEA) data file and match the latitude and longitude coordinates to the pictures, and then automatically add city, area/region, and country information.

Further information on 'meta-data' and geocoding.

To use PhotoGPSEditor you:

  1. Need to load some photos
  2. Import some GPS data
  3. Add some meta-data
  4. Save the photos

PhotoGPSEditor Tutorial

PhotoGPSEditor is easy to use!

The program can be used in one of two mode... either 'Advanced' mode, or 'Wizard' mode. The easiest way to get to know the program, and to understand how to use it is to use it in 'Wizard' mode as this will walk you through the process.

In the application disk image there is a folder (Pict) containing 10 photo files (with_data_1.jpg - with_data_5.jpg, and without_data_1.jpg - without_data_5.jpg). Five of the files are already 'geotagged' and have description/summary meta-data, and five are not. The folder 'gps' contains a GPS data file in the gpx format (it only contains five GPS data points).

If the photos are loaded in to the program then the photos with data can be viewed and their location seen on the map, the five matching photos (without location data) can then have data assigned by using one of the methods available in the 'Wizard'.

It should be noted that the photo time-stamp is 1 hour behind the time-stamp of the GPS data (this this the offset), so you should have an offset set to '+1" hour.
