What can I do with PhotoGPSEditor

PhotoGPSEditor is a program that allows you to edit or add 'meta-data' to a picture/photo file (see the tutorial) - the program supports a wide range of image formats including JPEG, TIFF and RAW images. Once this data has been added it stays associated with the file unless the file is re-written by a program that does not support 'meta-data'.

Picture meta-data is additional data associated with a picture / photo that describes the picture in some way so that the picture can be found by searches or catelogued. For example, if you took some pictures whilst on holiday you could add meta-data (keywords / description) to the pictures that describes the picture. This meta-data can added using PhotoGPSEditor and in addition you could also add 'location' information such as the latitude and longitude at which the picture was taken, and the name of the nearest town or city.

Latitude and longitude 'location' data can be added to individual or multiple photos in one of three ways using PhotoGPSEditor:

  1. By placing a pointer on the map in the 'map window' at the location the picture was taken.
  2. By extracting latitude and longitude information from GPS track data captured during the trip on which the photos were taken.
  3. By manually entering the latitude and longitude data.

Once a photo has 'position' information PhotoGPSEditor can then query a database at http://terraserver-usa.com/ to find the nearest town/area/country for those coordinates, and this information will also be added to the meta-data for the photo(s).

Further information on 'meta-data' and geocoding.

To use PhotoGPSEditor you:

  1. Need to load some photos
  2. Need to load some GPS track data
  3. Add some meta-data to the photos
  4. Finally, save the photos

How do I use PhotoGPSEditor?

PhotoGPSEditor can be used in an 'advanced' or a 'wizard' mode.

The first time the program starts it will be in 'wizard' mode. To go to 'advanced' mode just click on the button. If you wish to switch back to 'wizard' mode use the command in the 'Window' menu.

In 'wizard' mode you will be walked through the process of adding meta-data to your photos. There is also a tutorial (and assocaited files) that you can try.
