WebSiteCleaner Help

WebSiteCleaner is a 'one trick pony' for cleaning websites.

WebSiteCleaner will reduce the size of html files by removing unnecessary characters, and it will reduce the size of jpeg and gif files by removing resources forks and meta-data. This results in a smaller website, which loads faster, and uses less bandwidth.

How do I use WebSiteCleaner?

WebSiteCleaner can be used by either dragging the folder containing the website directly on to the application icon or on to the application window.

When you drop a folder on to the application (icon or window) the folder will be copied and renamed with a number as a suffix (the application checks for a duplicate folder and increments the number until a unique name is produced). The files, and directory structure, are then copied and 'cleaned'.

JPEG settings: JPEG files will have any excess data (e.g. meta-data etc.) removed and quality of the JPEG changed to that indicated by the slider in the application window (for most purposes a setting of 90 will produce a JPEG of suitable quality). The slider setting is remembered between application launches, therefore if a website folder is dragged on to the application icon, and the application is launched, then the JPEGs will be converted using the previous quality settings.

HTML files: Excess characters are removed. WebSiteCleaner is JavaScript friendly.

GIF files: Excess data is removed to produce a smaller file (animated GIFs still function).

Other file types (e.g. quicktime, flash etc.): These file types will still function after the site has been 'cleaned'.

Aliases and symbolic links: These are ignored and are not followed.

WARNING: After 'cleaning' it is advisable to check your site to assure it still functions correctly. Please report any problems to webcleaner-problememail@mmisoftware.co.uk

Version Checking: WebSiteCleaner can automatically check for new versions when the program is started, or by selecting 'Version Check...' from the 'WebSiteCleaner' menu.

It should be noted that no personal information is transmitted MMISoftware during the checking process. The process works just as if you had visited the MMISoftware website and manually checked for a change in version numbers. (Automatic checking can be turned off by selecting the checkbox. To turn automatic checking back on run a manual version check which will display the version check window.)

Why does an annoying window keep popping up when I launch WebSiteCleaner?

If you have not registered WebSiteCleaner, and you have used the program more than 5 times, then you will get a 'nag' screen when the application launches. The way to stop the window appearing is to register the program at MMISoftware for $14.95.
