JPEGCleaner

JPEGCleaner removes unnecessary data (meta-data, resource forks) from jpeg and gif files. This results in smaller files that are quicker to send by e-mail and require less storage space

We have carried out some analysis of the performance of JPEGCleaner. Typically we see a 20% saving in file size.

On average JPEGCleaner decrease the size of a JPEG file, at a quality setting of 90, and size 100%, by 21% (see table below). We have also run the test using GraphicConverter and achieved similar results. The images used for this study were taken using a digital camera that produces a 1600 x 1200, 72 dpi image with a compression of 1:18. Resaving the images with a quality setting of 90 in GraphicConverter and JPEGCleaner produces an image with a compression of 1:22 and 1:23, respectively, and at 100 a compression of 1:9 for both programs.

Where jpc = JPEGCleaner; gc = GraphicConverter; 100, or 90 represents a picture quality setting of 100 and 90 in both programs (it should be noted that the images from GraphicConverter will also prepared for the web by removing meta-data and resource forks)

The files were processed in "Batch mode" with JPEGCleaner (this is achieved by dropping a folder of jpeg files on the application icon or window).

If your processed files show an increase in size when processed with JPEGCleaner then you are likely increasing the 'quality' setting of the file from the original (i.e. note the effect of saving the file as at a quality of '100' in the above examples).
